Spoilers: Season 1 and 2.
Have you ever watched an anime and fell in love with the use of color?
I’m not just talking about what makes the animation come to life. I am talking about the bright prominent colors. The ones maybe before or during a fight that makes you feel some type of way. Whether it causes you to be excited or even uncomfortable. Colors evoke many emotions.
Dandadan is the perfect example.
Their color theory mixed with the emotions that are being portrayed are just fantastic. I also love how most of the colors that are being used convey many emotions.
This is in no particular order. It is a post to really just admire the artistic choices. It’s more like a rainbow order.
- Red

We get Turbo Granny and The Giant Crab.
When we see the color red it’s not always a good thing. It catches our attention quickly because now the characters are in a life or death situation.
The Giant Crab was a bound spirit. Who were actually about 6 or more girls that never wanted to become evil spirits. Yet they couldn’t cross over because of a traumatic and harsh ending to their lives. Being assaulted, chopped up, and left to rot. They were bound to the tunnel.
Then Turbo Granny lived in that tunnel. No one really knew what she was doing. All they knew was that she was dangerous, angry, and vengeful. Honestly I get it though. She had always shown up around the spirits of murdered girls. Maybe she was just trying to comfort those who couldn’t move on.
Well, plot twist. Turbo Granny and The Giant Crab would fuse together to fight. Which is pretty sick.
2. Orange

We see the true form of Naki Kito.
She is the head of the Kito family. The ones that took over Jiji’s house after they ended up in the hospital. Who had also attacked Momo in the hot springs. The family that interrogated Jiji and Okarun. And of course, let’s not forget…
This is the same family that was giving human sacrifices to a Giant Earthworm for over 200 years.
At the end of the Evil Eye Arc it is made very aware that Naki Kito had survived. By making this so prominent, you just know she is probably going to show up again. Especially since we have gotten to see her true form.
Her family was bat shit crazy.
I don’t know what this family is going to do next, but I don’t think I am ready.
3. Yellow

We either got the Aliens or a Giant Earthworm attacking them. Usually when we see the color yellow most of the time we don’t think of the negative. Though in this case it becomes uncomfortable and it makes you feel on edge.
Different arcs, different shades, while creating new fears.
The Aliens want to harvest humans with supernatural abilities for their own gain. To reproduce or some shit like that against the will of whoever they are targeting. Which makes it ever more creepy.
Then we have the Giant Earthworm who was getting fed human sacrifices from the Kito family. The worm had been fed for over 200 years and had powers to essentially make people go completely insane. Along with “guarding” a yokai who was the first sacrifice.
Both creepy and unsettling in different ways.
4. Green

Then we have Nessie the loch ness monster from the Serpo Arc and the Kaiju from shocking the Kaiju Arc.
In the Serpo Arc at first the screen is full of yellow and then we are swimming in green water. Not able to breathe and trying to fight against Nessie who clearly has the advantage.
The attacks were random, even against the aliens that hired them. Then Nessie fuses with the Mantis which makes them better with close combat. Though whatever weaknesses one had, the others suffered for it. Which means if you’re not aware then you are sure to lose. Which is exactly what happened.
Not knowing each other’s weaknesses caused them to fail.
Then far later in the series the city becomes a dark green. From an invisible being who found the other golden ball to a giant Kaiju that could look over the city.
Though I will say this one didn’t feel as dangerous as any of the other supernatural beings they have had to deal with. It’s really the one that makes you think some things are going to get damaged, but everyone is definitely going to live.
Then we find out that the Kaiju is an Alien girl who wears this suit. Which is probably going to be taken in considering how all the characters are being introduced.
I am super excited to see what they do with this character.
5. Blue

Man, I hate these perverted Aliens.
When we were first introduced to them they had captured Momo and were talking about stealing her banana organs to reproduce. Forcibly strapping her down to a chair. Oh and when you think it can’t get more unsettling one whips out its “thing” which is to harvest the banana organs.
Making the scene truly disgusting. You know, where the scene essentially is about to go and it is nowhere good.
I honestly think using blue for this scene made me so uncomfortable. When I think of blue it’s usually calming, peaceful, and maybe a little sadness. Not something that is going to scar someone for the rest of their life.
6. Purple

This is my favorite color so I was excited to see what they were going to do with it and they did NOT disappoint. For me this color is edgy and fun to play around with. Even though things get very dangerous and someone could have died if they weren’t able to get the situation under control. Evil Eye was someone I wasn’t expecting, but I love that he was introduced.
Jiji could feel its spirit and needed to find him. Though once he did that was it. Evil Eye fused with him and started attacking.
A Yokai that was trapped underground for years with no social interaction and so much rage built up just waiting to be released.
Turns out he was a child sacrifice that the Kito family had locked up, away from everyone. The kid was deprived of everything you could think of. This was a child that just wanted to be a kid and play. Though he thought murder was the way to have fun.
Jiji knew he needed a friend.
7. Pink

Pink can be viewed as being a maternal color. Which makes the character backstory hit a little more. This is Acro Silky and she arrives after Aira finds Okarun’s golden balls. And boy does it get crazy quickly.
She arrives claiming to be Aira’s mother. She imprinted onto her when she was a young kid. It just so happened that they both had lost someone close to them. Acro Silky a child and Aira a mother. Though when they reunited only she remembered because she had been waiting years for Aira to see her again.
So when she was rejected as such all hell broke loose. Leading to 3 of them being consumed, Acro Silky catching fire, them being thrown up, and 1 almost dying because she didn’t have supernatural powers.
Acro Silky had only wanted to protect Aira not hurt her.
She was a mother before she was a yokai. Therefore she would sacrifice herself for Aira to be able to live out the rest of her life. Acro Silky had already known her life was over. At least this would be the one thing she could do.
Do you enjoy the artistic choices that were made to create Dandadan? Did you also enjoy this post as much as I enjoyed writing this post? Well, if so please stay tuned it is going to become a fun little series I do.
In the meantime, I invite you to pull up a chair and stay for a while. We do have a variety of options. Though if you want to continue with Dandadan I wrote about Acro Silky and her just wanting to be a mother.
If you also need to catch up on Dandadan you can watch it on Crunchyroll.
