“HAPPY NEW YEAR, BITCH. TIME TO SUFFER“.
These aren’t moments. They’re crimes. Emotional felonies committed in high definition while I’m trying to eat instant ramen and mind my own business.
And the worst part is I keep bringing them up to people unprompted.
Like someone will ask how my week was and somehow I end up going “okay but have you seen Anohana though.” I made a list because apparently I enjoy this and also I have no self control.
Naruto vs. Kabuto – First Rasengan
Not the clean one. Not the slow-motion heroic version they’d polish up later when the show had a bigger budget and more confidence.
The ugly, shaking, I-have-no-idea-what-I’m-doing-but-I’m-doing-it-anyway version. Naruto looks like a feral raccoon who absorbed physics by accident twenty minutes ago and decided the weaponizing step was fine to skip ahead to.
There’s so much desperation in it and somehow the desperation is the whole point, because the show looks you in the eye at that exact second and goes: this kid is going to break the world.
He’s going to cry the whole time. You’re going to watch every minute of it.
Yuji’s First Black Flash – Jujutsu Kaisen
Bro didn’t choose this. Violence assessed the situation, ran the numbers, and chose him.
The Black Flash connects and the animation does something I can only describe as the budget achieving enlightenment in real time while I watch my mental stability file for bankruptcy in the background.
The intensity of that moment locks in.
Every punch in JJK after carries more weight because now you know what the weight can become when it all lines up right.
Momiji Sohma – Fruits Basket
I walked in expecting cute zodiac chaos, maybe some light drama, something cozy.
Instead I got a kid in a rabbit costume delivering the most quietly devastating backstory imaginable while smiling like he’s describing a sandwich he had last week.
And I had to sit with that for a minute because what do you even do with that.
The contrast between how Momiji presents and what he’s actually carrying is genuinely mean in how well it works. Fruits Basket just drops it in front of you and walks away.
Figure it out. Feel it later.
10/10 cruelty. Highly recommend.
The Summer Hikaru Died – THAT Smile™
You know when something looks right and feels completely wrong and your brain can’t explain the gap? That’s the whole moment. The smile has the right shape, the right timing, everything technically checks out.
And something in your nervous system fires an alarm anyway because the person who used to live there is gone, and whatever is standing in that spot has been practicing.
They said cozy horror. They didn’t say existential crisis with warm lighting. I’m not okay and I deserve an apology.
One Piece – “Nothing happened.”
Zoro absorbs every lightning bolt in the general area, stands there bleeding from locations that should not be capable of bleeding, and shrugs.
No speech. No dramatic collapse. No acknowledgment that what just happened was physically possible. Just loyalty so unhinged it reads as a personal threat, delivered without comment.
I haven’t breathed correctly since 2008. I’ve made peace with that. Still bring it up randomly though. Still will.
Anohana – Menma’s Letter
This is one of the first things I think of when someone asks me about sad anime. Just the letter. The silence before it lands might actually be worse than the moment itself.
The show has been building toward it, you know it’s coming, your body tenses up anyway, and then it arrives and none of that preparation mattered at all.
Suddenly it’s 3am and you’re ugly crying into a hoodie wondering why you trusted this show to be gentle with you. Anohana is short. It doesn’t need much time to do serious damage.
Another – The Umbrella Scene
Also one of the first things I think of when I think about this show, full stop.
No music. No warning. Just the sound of the show finally making good on something it set up several episodes ago, cold and completely unhurried about it.
I felt that scene in places I didn’t know could receive information. Up until then you could tell yourself the usual horror rules still applied, that being a main character meant something.
This scene closes that negotiation for good. The show said so.
Gachikuta – Rudo Looks Around
There’s a real difference between a character realizing life isn’t fair and a character realizing it’s specifically, personally unfair in a way that has been engineered.
Rudo crosses that second line here. He doesn’t scream or break anything. He looks around, takes it in, and understands something about his situation that he won’t be able to un-understand.
Whatever was holding onto hope in that moment lets go, and something else takes its place. Holy shit, right? The show earns it so quietly.
New Year in anime is never actually about celebration.
It’s the story waiting for you to drop your guard, then tapping you on the shoulder.
If this is how the year starts, we’re not surviving it intact.
We’re going to be found in front of our screens weeks from now, completely dehydrated, whispering that it was worth it.
Send help. Or more anime. Honestly either works.
